It’s not enough to only know the AIESEC values - values are made to be lived. In this series of articles, we’ll be exploring the six AIESEC values and how we as an organisation and you as an individual can live these values on a daily basis.
What does it mean to act sustainably? Acting sustainably opens a window of possibilities on living sustainably and harmoniously. Today and tomorrow present us with challenges that are defined by climate change outcomes, resource scarcity, population growth, overconsumption and inequitable access, leaving us with the increased potential for conflict and loss of basic human rights.
We as AIESECers have the responsibility of ensuring equitable access to recourses if we are to live in a peaceful environment. As AIESECers, we always strive to create opportunities to empower youth now and with a view to the future.
In December 2015 we had the opportunity to promote and drive youth participation in the implementation of Global Goals for Sustainable Development at the Youth Action Summit in New York. AIESEC’s young global leaders and representatives gathered at the United Nations head quarters and committed to implement them and act upon creating awareness, foster engagement and taking action upon the SDGs.
Nowadays, LCs are aligning Global Volunteer projects to the SDGs, improving the quality of our projects by shaping them around what the world needs. The small actions by everyone within the LC to push for greater goals and act sustainably is an effort to increase:
- Our resources in a way that leave the best condition for the future years;
- Maximize financial sustainability after assuring a high level of quality;
- An attitude of respect for the future generations throughout an AIESEC experience;
- Supporting each other and build on what has been done in the past to ensure continuity;
- Think and plan for the long term;
- Plan to focus our efforts in only that which we can achieve and consider the environment in the use of natural resources in our entities.
As AIESECers, we always strive to create opportunities to empower youth now and with a view to the future. We need to truly live AIESEC’s value of Acting Sustainably in all we do as an organisation, and take the fearless steps we need to in order to continuously improve our organisation to be the best it can be. And it all starts from the small actions we do on a daily basis in our teams, in our LCs, in our MCs.
